NEW YORK -- AOL LLC, an Internet company struggling to adapt to an advertising-driven economy, is looking to shed as much as 36 percent of its work force as it prepares to spin off from Time Warner Inc. next month.

T-Mobile hails no-contract smartphone as 1st that's prepaid

T-Mobile is selling a no-contract, prepaid smartphone, the BlackBerry Curve 8520. It says it is the first national carrier to offer a prepaid smartphone. The handset is $60 and provides the first month for free. A variety of data, text and video plans start at $50 per month. Other handsets that aren't smartphones also are offered through the package, available at Best Buy and some Wal-Marts, called T-Mobile Complete.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Power-hungry TVs will be banned from store shelves in California after state regulators Wednesday adopted a first-in-the-nation mandate to reduce electricity demand.

A Cook County judge today set a Dec. 18 date for Buffalo Grove Trustee Lisa Stone to learn the name and address of the person who allegedly made nasty — and anonymous — comments about Stone’s teenage son on the Daily Herald’s Web site.

They are less often the originators of those sendups -- standouts such as Dennis Miller and his less comedically accomplished conservative compatriot Rush Limbaugh notwithstanding -- especially when it comes to taking conservative comrades to task.
